PFAS Information & Results

The Town of Bridgewater posts PFAS water testing results on the website monthly. While residents generally receive water from the well closest to their location, water from the Town’s wells may be blended throughout the distribution system.

For questions about PFAS results, water quality, or the Town’s water system, please get in touch with the Water Supply Department at 508-697-0910.

To view well locations and the water distribution system, please see the Water Distribution System Map.

What is PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, are a group of artificial chemicals that have been used in many consumer, commercial, and industrial products since the 1940s. PFAS are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they break down very slowly and can accumulate over time in the environment and the human body.

PFAS may be found in certain food packaging, stain- and water-resistant products, nonstick cookware, cleaning products, firefighting foam, industrial facilities, and some drinking water sources.

For more information, visit the EPA’s PFAS information page.

PFAS Regulations in Drinking Water

Massachusetts drinking water regulations establish a Maximum Contaminant Level, or MCL, for six PFAS compounds, known as PFAS6. These regulations include sampling requirements, corrective actions, public education, and notification requirements when the standard is exceeded.
