Board of Assessors
The Board of Assessors is responsible for overseeing the fair and equitable valuation of real and personal property in the Town of Bridgewater in accordance with Massachusetts law.
Composition & Oversight
The Board of Assessors consists of three (3) members. Under the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws, Chapters 58 through 65C, the Board operates under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Revenue, who may revise rules, regulations, and guidelines as necessary to establish minimum standards of assessment performance.
Assessment & Certification Process
Before assessment values, new growth, and tax rates are set, they must be certified annually by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR). This certification ensures that property values are accurate, uniform, and in compliance with state standards.
Every three years, the Department of Revenue conducts a formal review by sending an audit team to the Town. The audit evaluates assessment methodologies and requires the Board of Assessors to meet specific statistical criteria in order for the Town to be certified for revaluation.
