Board of Registrars
The Board of Registrars is responsible for administering voter registration and election-related duties in the Town of Bridgewater in accordance with Massachusetts law.
Duties & Authority
The Board of Registrars conducts voter registration sessions, certifies signatures on nomination papers and petitions, holds hearings, and resolves disputes regarding nomination papers. The Board also prepares the annual list of registered voters and performs all other duties as set forth in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 51.
The Board of Registrars is a regulatory and ministerial committee of the Town.
Composition & Appointments
The Board of Registrars of Voters consists of the Town Clerk and three (3) additional members. Members are appointed to ensure representation of the two leading political parties. In no case shall appointments result in more than two members, including the Town Clerk, from the same political party.
Appointments are made from a list submitted by the Town Committee of the political party from which the position is to be filled. Each list must contain the names of three enrolled members of that party who are residents of the Town and selected by a majority vote at a duly called committee meeting.
Members are appointed each February for three-year terms, with one member appointed each year to maintain staggered terms.
