About the Open Space Committee
The Open Space Committee advises and assists the Town Manager on the preservation of open space and the development and updates of Bridgewater’s Open Space Plan.
Purpose
The Open Space Committee advises and assists the Town Manager on the preservation of open space and the development and updating of the Open Space Plan.
The Committee evaluates opportunities for the acquisition and protection of open space parcels based on several criteria, including whether a parcel would:
- Help preserve Bridgewater’s character
- Protect Bridgewater’s water resources
- Abut or connect with existing conservation lands
- Provide public access for walking, biking, or other passive recreation
- Preserve or enhance distinctive streetscapes, views, or vistas
- Preserve important wildlife and vegetation habitat
The Committee works with Town residents, local officials, state and federal agencies, and private nonprofit land conservation organizations to further these objectives.
The Open Space Committee serves as an advisory committee of the Town.

Key Plans & Reports
2016 Bridgewater Recreational Needs Assessment
Evaluates 12 active and 9 passive recreation facilities and provides an inventory of recreation resources before the development of the 2017 Open Space & Recreation Plan and Master Plan.
- Section 3: Recreation Resources Inventory and evaluation of public recreation facilities and areas, including the level of protection as open space for each parcel.
- Section 4: General recommendations and improvement priorities.
2017 Open Space and Recreation Plan Update
- Section 9 includes a 7-year Action Plan with 5 goals.
- Lists responsible parties and actions for each parcel.
Bridgewater Parklands Report – Intern Project Report
- Intern evaluation of 6 parklands with no public survey or meetings.
- Purpose: Provide a strategy to implement the 2017 Open Space & Recreation Plan for the six community parklands overseen by the Conservation Commission and managed by volunteer Park Stewards: Carver Pond, Ironworks, Titicut, Stiles & Hart, Tuckerwood, and Wyman Meadow.
Municipal Vulnerability Plan (2019)
- Identifies areas vulnerable to climate change, including wetlands and farmlands.
- Notes that agricultural land preservation initiatives are needed as Project #14.
