Before You Begin

  • Filing this application does not stay the collection of the tax as billed.
  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • A new bill will not be issued.
  • When applying for an adjustment, it is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the Assessor’s Office for the new amount due.
  • Refunds will be issued for overpayments.

Please Note

No excise may be reduced to less than $5.00. No abatement for less than $5.00 will be granted, and no refund of less than $5.00 will be made.

Leased Vehicles

If the excise tax you are applying to abate is for a leased vehicle, please do not apply. The leasing company must apply for the abatement because it was the registered owner.

Please contact the leasing company directly to request a refund.

Two documents are required to apply for an abatement when a vehicle was returned. The required documents are a letter from dealer certifying return. The document must include the VIN Number date of return.

Registration/plate cancellation receipt. C-19 Form (Affidavit of lost or stolen plate from RMV) or new registration if plate transferred to another vehicle is also required.
